12 DAYS: UGANDA and RWANDA for PRIMATES and BIG GAME
Your chances of seeing all the big game animals and mountain gorillas are extremely high on this tour which takes in four National Parks in Uganda and one in Rwanda. You will also see so many other animals, including other primates, smaller game, birds and butterflies.
Day 1: Entebbe/Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park
Homestead Tours and Safaris driver/guide will pick you up from your hotel, then drive you through verdant countryside. A stopover is made at Masindi for snacks at Masindi Hotel. Your trip continues through Budongo Forest and to the top of Murchison Falls where you can feel the spray as the huge river Nile crashes dramatically through a narrow gap of only 7m.
If you are booked in to Paraa Safari Lodge, cross the Nile by ferry at 5pm or 6pm. You can also experience a short evening game drive.
Day 2: Murchison Falls National Park
Be ready for a dawn game drive after an early cup of African tea or coffee, and enjoy bird watching and sightseeing across the open savannah along the Nile and Albert Deltas. Expect to meet elephants, giraffes, buffalo, lions, waterbuck, hartebeest, hippos, Uganda kob and countless birds. If you are very lucky, you may see a leopard.
You will return to the lodge for a late breakfast and lunch. After lunch, a three-hour boat trip up the Nile gives you the chance to see Murchison Falls from below. Many animals can be seen along the shores of the river, including hippos, crocodiles, elephants and aquatic birds.
Day 3: Murchison Falls National Park to Kibale Forest National Park
An early start by road for Kibale National Park through the southern part of the Park to Hoima and beyond. If you didn't have time to visit the top of Murchison Falls on your way up, you may have an opportunity today. This long drive will take us about 8 hours.
Day 4: Kibale Forest to Queen Elizabeth National Park
Get up early for a morning trek to see the chimpanzees. Kibale is the best reserve in Africa to view chimps, a thick jungle with a towering canopy. In the afternoon, drive south to Queen Elizabeth National Park, with sightseeing and game viewing en route.
Day 5: Queen Elizabeth National Park
Begin your day with a hot drink, followed by an early morning game drive along Kasenyi and Queens Mile where you may encounter elephants, buffalo, waterbuck, warthogs, lions, Uganda kob and a variety of birds.
Return to the lodge for a late breakfast and lunch. After lunch, a two-hour boat trip along the famous Kazinga Channel is worthwhile as you will have the opportunity to see hippo, buffalo, Ugandan kob, elephants, warthogs and a wonderful variety of spectacular birds along the shoreline.
Day 6: Queen Elizabeth National Park to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
There will be a morning game drive to Ishasha on your way to Bwindi, in search of the famous tree-climbing lions. Later, drive up from the plains of the Rift Valley into the hills. You will pass through beautiful scenery with tea plantations before entering Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Bwindi Forest National Park is a lush highland rainforest, filled with primates and exotic birds.
The afternoon is spent on a foot safari around the local communities near the Park.
Day 7: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Forest National Park
Begin the day with an early breakfast, followed by a briefing from the Ugandan Wildlife Authority staff. Make sure you bring your rain jacket, trousers, drinking water, snacks and walking boots. The guides will lead you inside the forest to see the shy primates. The tracking may take between 3 and 8 hours, but it is well worth the effort. Day 8: Bwindi Forest to Parc National des Volcans, Rwanda
After breakfast you will transfer to Rwanda, driving south through Kisoro to the border at Kyanika where you will stay in one of the lodges or guest houses close to the Parc National des Volcans (Volcanoes National Park). Spend a relaxing afternoon.
Day 9: Gorilla Experience in Rwanda
After breakfast, you will drive to the Park Headquarters where you will meet the ranger guides. After a briefing, you will begin the search for mountain gorillas. The trek can be quite tough and can last between 2 and 8 hours.
Day 10: Forest Walk
After breakfast, go for a forest walk to look for other primates, like colobus monkeys, as well as birds and butterflies. Return to the lodge for late lunch. After lunch relax at the lodge.
Day 11: Volcanoes National Park to Lake Kivu
Have breakfast, then drive to Gisenyi on the northern shore of Lake Kivu. Participate in optional activities such as swimming, a boat ride or sun bathing.
Day 12: Departure: Gisenyi to Kigali
Have breakfast and transfer to Kigali. In Kigali, you may do a city tour and visit the Genocide Memorial Site. Then transfer to the airport for your departure flight home.
